I’ve often heard this saying, and had a general idea of the meaning, but further research led to some insight.
The “Something Old” shows the strength of marriage and the link between your old life and your new, married one. For their “something old”, Many brides chose an item that was special to them as a child or an item from someone that was special to them at some point in their life.

The “Something New” symbolizes the start of your new life together, a marriage built to last the tests of time. A good “something new” would be an item that has meaning to you and your fiancé”s dreams and goals for the future.

The “Something Borrowed” signifies a giving friendship; this is usually an item from a close married friend who has been important in your life or who you admire; an item that will hopefully bring you the same marital bliss that she has.

The “Something Blue” symbolizes the love, faithfulness and purity of your marriage together, offering you a “sky” full of love and living between the two of you.

Finally, the “lucky sixpence in your shoe” stands for your good fortune in your new life together. A shiny dime is a common substitute for the sixpence; and a bit easier to come by!
With so many beautiful options available to brides, choosing a dress, flowers, colors & cake can be daunting. This is why several sites suggest creating an inspiration board. The idea with the board is to gather images that inspire you. By sharing your board, you will have a much easier time conveying your ideas to your florist, baker, etc. I’ve posted a few of my favorites below. If you’d like to create your own inspiration, there are a lot of sites that offer drag and drop tools. Try Wedding Wire’s board tool at: http://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-planning/wedding-inspiration-boards.html
If you create a board, please be sure to share with us. I’d love to see your inspirations.

The website, etsy.com, lists 144,877 handcrafted wedding-related items for sale. If you’ve never visited Etsy, you’re missing out. If it’s been a while since your last visit, don’t discount the power of Etsy for generating ideas or purchasing really neat vintage items, orginal art, and handcrafted goods. I could and have spent hours upon hours on Etsy; however, a quick perusal of the wedding homepage, displayed everything from neat letterpress invitations and personalized jewelry for the bridal party, to unique handmade hair accessories.
Under “Something Blue”, I found a lot of beautiful items to fulfill the wives’ tale.

This shabby-chic rossette garter with vintage jewel accent by Sweetly Fallen is only $40.00. What a fun way to make sure all the luck possible comes your way. If you’re into tradition, forget about throwing this beautiful garter, and losing it forever; a “toss garter” is included in the price.
Etsy will have you forgetting about boring mass-produced cards and invitations. For $21.95, Love To Create Stamps will send you a unique save-the-date stamp

Who doesn’t love birds right now? They’re classy, as well as contemporary. These are some of the most unique place cards and table numbers I’ve seen. If this detail is not in your budget, share the info with your girlfriends. I could see these beautiful cards used at a shower. $50/50 by Timeless Paper

Looking for the perfect dress for your upcoming wedding at Lingrow Farm? This year’s dress trends, all available through the Exquisite Bride in Gibsonia, bring modern twists to classic styles with fifties-inspired and mermaid looks, and details like colorful accents, mini and tea lengths, and pockets.
The most prevalent wedding dress trend in 2010 has to be gowns with pockets. From dresses with eye-catching kangaroo pockets to those with slits hidden at the seams, pockets are making wedding dresses more modern, trendy and useful. Some modern dresses flaunt their pockets, like the Mikaella Style #1501 below.
When shopping for dresses this season, you’ll find even traditional-looking dresses, like the Maggie Sottero “Dawn” dress below, hiding modern pockets!
In shape and style, the fifties are coming back in a big way. With fifties-inspired shapes, like the popular mermaid and tea length gowns, and details like belts, the glamorous dresses are being revived.
Essence of Australia Style #D1129
Eden Bridals #1386
One of the most daring styles we’re seeing in 2010 is a colorful gown worn on the bride instead of the bridesmaids. Last season, many gowns flaunted green, blue and yellow accent colors with sashes, embroidery and trim, but this year many brides are choosing full-on color for their wedding day, like the gown below from Emerald Couturiers in Style #7102.
All of the gowns shown are available through Exquisite Bride in Gibsonia – you can reach them at 724-3BRIDES.
Whatever style of gown you choose, we believe the only thing you need to pull it off is a little bit of confidence and your best accessory: a smile!
Sincerely,
Linda of Lingrow Farm
Ashley and Brett were married on June 26, 2010 at Lingrow Farm and they, along with their talented photographer Nate Weatherly, were gracious enough to share the photos from their wedding.
We’ll be posing these in blocks over the next week – this one shows landscapes of Lingrow Farm including some of our furry friends!
I hope you enjoy, and if you’d like to get in touch with Nate Weatherly, you can find his work at NateWeatherly.com.

With the great number of weddings we host at Lingrow Farm each year, we’ve seen couples carry on cultural traditions from all over the world. But the one unique custom that we see most often is a cookie table at the wedding reception – a true Pittsburgh institution.
If you aren’t a native Pittsburgher or haven’t attended a wedding here, you may never have come across the delicious practice of supplementing a wedding cake with a large display of homemade cookies. But in Western Pennsylvania, cookie tables are a customary part of the wedding reception.
Although it might seem like a lot of work to bake hundreds of cookies for your wedding day, especially when the guests are being served dessert, the cookie table offers family and friends the chance to get involved and contribute to the actual event. The cookies, usually dainty varieties like pizzelles and lady fingers, are often prepared by the bride’s mother, grandmothers, aunts, and friends weeks or months in advance and frozen until the big day.
While there are many debates over the cookie table’s origin – many claim Italian and Eastern European weddings in Youngstown, Ohio – and the offerings, one thing that never changes is the opportunity to be creative and customize the tradition to your taste.
Consider using a tiered cookie tray as each reception table’s centerpiece, mixing and matching Grandma’s nut rolls with Aunt Trudy’s rum balls. Choose cookies that match your wedding colors and mix in coordinating candies like M&M’s and Jolly Ranchers. Or, unveil the table after the cake cutting ceremony for dramatic effect.
With a little creativity, your cookie table can also double as your favors table. Set out wedding-worthy containers for your guests to pack up a dozen of their favorites to take home and enjoy, or work with your caterer to place a custom shot glass full of milk under each cookie as a treat that also serves as a favor. Who doesn’t love cookies and milk?
Whatever your take on Pittsburgh’s unique cookie table tradition, we’re always here to help you customize and execute your favorite wedding customs.
Sincerely,
Linda of Lingrow Farm
